As we hit the brink of summer weather, we, as foot and ankle doctors can hear the heel-smacking sound of flip flops across the streets of Cleveland.

It is estimated that 15 percent of all adult foot complaints involve plantar fasciitis, the type of heel pain caused by chronic inflammation of the connective tissue extending from the heel bone to the toes. The two big culprits: excess weight and inappropriate footwear.

We hate to break  the news, but your traditional flip flop falls into that second category. Can we just say, “Zero Arch Support”?

They may be cute, but here’s the tradeoff:

The sharp stinging pain is most noticeable after getting out of bed in the morning, and it tends to decrease after a few minutes and returns during the day as time on the feet increases.

With the right treatment and footwear, most patients with plantar fasciitis can respond to non-surgical treatment within weeks. However, surgery is sometimes necessary to relieve severe, persistent pain.
